About STATMed Pathology
STATMed Pathology (Drs Hudson & Swart Inc.) is an independent pathology practice focused on rapid, high–quality blood testing at hospitals and care facilities across South Africa.
We operate standalone emergency center laboratories, and point–of–care services (such as blood gasses) embedded within partner hospitals, allowing rapid turnaround times for critically ill patients whilst maintaining the quality and governance of a central laboratory.
Our fully digital laboratories, combined with a cutting edge lab information system, provide a unique approach to near patient care that allows rapid turn around, whilst still following the best practicies laid out in ISO15189.
Scope of laboratory activities & advisory services
STATMed Pathology focuses on emergency room testing, with an emphasis on rapid, clinically relevant results in the following areas:
- General chemistry, haematology, and selected immunoassays.
- Blood gasses.
Laboratory turnaround times depend on multiple factors, but our emergency center laboratories will typically return complete results for most patients within 40 minutes of blood being drawn. More specialised or send‐away tests may have longer turnaround times; clinicians are advised to confirm test–specific turnaround times with the on-site laboratory.
Advisory services are available from the STATMed pathology team. Clinicians may request:
- Interpretation of complex or unexpected results.
- Advice on appropriate test selection for specific clinical questions.
- Assistance with pre- and post- analytical issues and other troubleshooting.
Advisory support is available 24 hours a day at all 24/7 sites. At Midstream Medical Center, advisory services are available during normal business hours.
Sample Collection Process
Requsition Forms
Test requests should be made using the supplied requisition form. A complete form should clearly specific:
- Patient identifier and demographics (full name, date of birth, gender, identity number, and hospital visit number).
- Requesting clinician and phlebotomist responsible for the draw.
- Requested tests.
After requests can be requested directly from the laboratory itself, with each request handled on a case by case basis with as to the viability of the collected sample for the requested tests.
Collection & Handling
Blood samples are collected by appropriately trained personnel using approved and standardised tubes and collection techniques. Policies for patient identification, infection prevention and control, and sample transport are followed at all times.
Various pre-analytical factors are known to affect the validity of results, and great care is taken to avoid such issues during sample collection:
- Incorrect order of draw, under-/over-filled tubes, or inadequate mixing.
- Haemolysed, lipaemic or otherwise contaminated samples.
- Delayed delivery of samples to the laboratory or instrument, especially for blood gases.
- Samples drawn from patients with active IV lines.
Where a sample is unsuitable for analysis, or where such factors may materially affect the result, the laboratory will report this and may request a repeat blood draw.

Accessing laboratory results
STATMed Pathology results are available to authorised healthcare professionals and patients on request.
- Email: results@statmed.co.za
Requirements for patient consent
To protect patient confidentiality, access to individual patient results is restricted. Requests must include sufficient information to confirm identity and authorisation:
- Full patient identification (name, date of birth and, where available, ID number or hospital number).
- Details of the requesting clinician or authorised representative.
- Confirmation of the patient’s consent, or a clear legal entitlement to access the information.
Requests without adequate identification or consent information may be declined or delayed until appropriate documentation is provided.

Factors affecting performance & interpretation
The reliability and interpretation of results may be affected by clinical and pre-analytical factors. When reviewing results, clinicians should consider:
- Sample quality (e.g. haemolysis, lipaemia or contamination).
- Timing of sampling in relation to clinical events, treatments and fluid resuscitation.
- Collection site (arterial vs venous vs capillary) for blood gas analysis.
- Delays between sample collection and analysis, particularly for unstable analytes.
Where there is uncertainty about the validity of a result or its clinical significance, clinicians are encouraged to contact the STATMed laboratory for advice.
Feedback & complaints
STATMed Pathology welcomes feedback and takes all complaints seriously as part of our quality improvement process.
If you have a concern about the service, result quality, turnaround time or staff interaction, please provide details (including patient identifiers where relevant) via:
- Email: support@statmed.co.za
Complaints are logged, investigated by the laboratory management team and, where appropriate, corrective and preventive actions are implemented. A response will be provided to the complainant once the investigation is complete.
